Resolved Question: Did Noah have a fridge in his Ark?

I promise to try to believe in the Bible if you could just have the kindness to explain a few things to me: How did Noah keep his animals apart, so that not one single extinction could take part? As it is, he needed a boat as large as the Empire State building, and if he had to keep 3,000,000,000 petri dishes for his bacteria, as many boxes for his insects, thousands of cages, aquaria, vivaria, trees and burrows, I guess he must have been an architectural genius. How did he keep the animals that needed extreme pressure and 100° Celsius to survive, like the tube worms of hydrothermal sources 9,000+ feet below the surface of the sea? How did his extremophiles survive, as they need high ultraviolet exposure and rare oxygen? How did he get his stromatolites onto the Ark; they are so heavy, how did he carry them to Turkey from Australia? What about the kangaroos and koalas and duck billed platy******? How did he stop his termites from destroying the Ark? How did he keep the algae alive that need -4° celsius to survive? How did he protect the edelweiss from dying outside of its natural niche? Where did he put the blue whales and humpbacks and so on? Did he pull them along behind the Ark? And when the floods subsided, how did he get them back to the ocean before they collapsed from dehydration and from the pressure of their own weight? Did he take a couple of mammoths with him? Didn't they suffer from the heat? Did he take a couple of "Dahus rupicapta vacca montanus " with him, and if so, how did they survive, did he take a mountainside onto his Ark so that they could walk around in circles, instead of falling over? (Left legs smaller than right legs). Did he take just one Aphid? (Parthenogenesis). How did he make sure he had one female and one male of each homomorphic couple, instead of two of the same, whereas modern biologists need blood samples to do this? I'm sure there is a perfectly good explanation for all this and that I'm being an awful demanding bore. But most Creationists have a stock of convincing arguments, come on, impress me !Of COURSE ! I'm SOO stupid! Noah didn't need to take all the marine animals onto the boat ! But then why did the Bible say he did...?Dear rhee., I did NOT copy-paste anything, I made it all up in my ******** little head. Thanks for the insults ; I was very polite wasn't I?Owldude: bugs and bacteria need air (except anaerobic bacteria).PETER. I have seen the light, you have convinced me, now I know that all the animals that were not saved by Noah just evolved from the few animals on board. (In the 2,800 years since the Flood). As promised, I am on my way to the Bible. But now I'll have to buy myself a proper door-stop.I'm fascinated by the Single Land Mass argument. When was Noah supposed to have built the Ark? 100,000,000 years ago the Americas were already separate from Gondwana, so Noah's Ark must have been before that. Maybe 200 million years ago, when the whole land mass was still intact, and all the animals could have hitched across to God's chosen land? But then, hey, there's a problem...No man had been created then, how did Noah come into the picture?I don't pride myself on my knowledge which is about as good as anyone else's and no more, but some of the arguments here are awesome ! Some of them are copy-pasted (I discovered to my dismay) which is a shame, because it stops people really THINKING... Whilst trying to discover more about this elaborate fallacy, I came upon a good Q&A site where dsm luck's answer is very helpful. So help yourselves!http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=151463 Thanks everyone ! No Best answer, vote for yourselves. more

Resolved Question: Help with a koi pond...?

Firstly, I have no experience in outdoor ponds, however, I have been successfully been running large tropical aquariums for a few years. What I am looking to build is a 6ft x 6ft raised pond and about 4ft deep. Not too sure about the shape, but i'm still thinking it being square with a waterfall into it, and maybe waterfall overflowing the main pond into a smaller 6ft x 1ft x 3ft raised pond beneath it, if you get what i mean. It will be built up with block and brick, with 2ft either end being clear bricks, then rendered and granite tiled beneath the water, with hopefully 2 large koi and an algae eater of some sort, I have no clue about cold water algae eaters. Also about 3 flowering lillies, and some white sumegable lights, with the whole thing being a japanese theme. I haven't worked out the volume in litres, as this is just a rough size, as i'm looking to start it in august. What would be the best filter to do the job that's not mega money, middle of the road price if you like. What would be the best algae eater? Would I need UV lights or skimmers? Thanks more

Voting Question: Help with daisy chaining leds?

I want to do a small project, but i'm not electrically minded at all, so i need help! For the top of my aquarium i'm looking to have a moonlight effect on the water. How i want to achieve this is by daisy chaining around 5 blue leds on a length of wire to a battery with on/off switch. Do i need resistors? And how do i do this? Thanks more

Voting Question: Gerbil care questions?

I own a Syrian hamster and Lionhead rabbit and been thinking of getting some Winter White hamsters, though have suddenly developed a liking for gerbils, after not really having many breeders or variety of dwarf hamsters in my area. (I like unique pets, my bunny is white with blue markings and my hamster is white with yellow splodges, not many of them about.) And there seems to be quite a variety of gerbils. I've just not really researched on gerbils before and I wanna ask afew questions? 1) Are they awake during the day? (I think I heard they are but I'm not sure) 2) How similar is their care to hamsters? 3) How many should I get? Probably 2 or so but I dunno. Probably this cage? http://www.petsathome.com/find/category-is-6+Small+Pets/category-is-6C+Cages/category-is-6C02+Cages/product-is-14991 4) How many would fit happily in there? 5) Is there like a rule of boys will fight if together or something? That's usually the case with men. 6) Would they be noisy at night? Since I'm thinking of putting them in my room 7) Would they have to be in a gerbilarium or would they be alright in just an aquarium? 8) Anything I should know about their care? 9) Pros? 10) Cons? Cheers, just wanna be prepared and to see if gerbils are right for me. :]Also, how easy is it to introduce new gerbils into a pack? more

Resolved Question: choosing a snake - help?

hi, I may be getting a snake as a pet sometime soon, and I'm having trouble choosing! I know beginners go for ball pythons and corn snakes, but i don't want a small snake, I like the size of the adult ball pythons but I'm not sure if its possible to buy them as adults? Also, in the place where its tank would go, would it be okay to use an empty aquarium (with a lock and a lid etc)? I can fit a tall-ish rectangular/square tank so I suppose it'd be best to get a snake that would climb, but I'm not sure which ones climb, which ones climb but would need a really big tank, etc etc. Also, If i'm a first-time snake owner, will i be able to buy a snake that isn't one like a corn snake? Will I be allowed to buy an adult? Thanks more

Resolved Question: Silver sharks for my aquarium?

I have quite a small tank. its about 50 something litres(UK) which is around 13 gallons i think . I never stocked it completely last time and my fish gradually all died even tho the water chemistry was fine and no obvious diseases etc i was devastated that i let them die but honestly couldnt work out why it happened! anyway am starting again and was wondering is it too small a space to put two silver sharks in? just them. i know i cant add many big fish and i wont have much decoration/vegetaion in the tank. i dont use real plants either. Last time i had 4 corys, 5 platys and 4 guppies...not all at same time tho lol!i know how to set one up and i done so very well thankyou! i always research before i do anything. I just wondered about the silver sharks because my dad kept two in his tank which was the size of mine plus a third in length and his were fine even with other fish. they just dont grow to the maximum size . all fish grow according to the space they havea 150 l tank must be huge tho and ive seen the sharks in tanks smaller than that more

Resolved Question: Thermostat for poultry incubator?

I am building an incubator for poultry eggs. I have a well insulated plastic box which will accommodate about 50 eggs and have fitted a small computer fan to circulate the air. I am using light bulbs as a heat source and have tried a number of different thermostats in an attempt to maintain an even temperature. I have tried a hot water storage tank thermostat, aquarium heater stat, I have bought two thermostat kits widely advertised on eBay as suitable but without success. I need one that that will maintain a steady temperature of 38.5 degrees. Everything I have tried so far has too wide a margin between shutting off and cutting back in again. Any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Angelfish difficulties? very simple questions!?

I have a 12g freshwater tropical aquarium, here are the stats: pH: 7.5 Temperature: 81F Water changes: every week, on tuesday, 25% ammonia:0.0ppm nitrite:0.0ppm nitrate:0.0ppm ( it is, i tried several test tubes and it's 0.0ppm for sure ) tank size:12 gallons filter: 110-120GPH plants: anacharis and anbubias inhabitants: 5 Rummy nosed Tetras, 1 small 2" angelfish, 1 male molly and 4 guppy fry ( in breeder net within the aquarium ) I had 2 angelfish and no other fish except 3 guppies, the angelfish killed 2 guppies and i returned the big angelfish and added a molly and 5 rummy nose tetras, ever since the big angelfish has left, his top fin ( dorsal, i think ) has been down, it rises up when he gets angry at other fish or when he eats. He spends the majority of his time in the plants or staring at the corner of the aquarium, gills moving, eyes moving everything normal except for that fin. He is very short tempered with all of the fish, i fed him a baby guppy ( healthy ) Should i do an early water change? ( everything is perfect ) he has been in the tank for aobut 2 weeks now and has never been this lethargic, he moves but doesn't really swim around, only once in a while, he does not like the molly and warns the tetras to basically f*ck off. Everything is great, the tank is cycled and everything BTW, the tetras and molly were added about 2 days ago, they are healthy and schooling actively. What should i do for the angelfish or is this a stage? And a question for the tetras? once in a while, one of them leaves the school and swims really fast like a maniac, just darting everywhere, than he sees his school and returns, and everything carries on, is this normal or should i worry? I checked several times for ich, dropsy, fin rot and so on but nothing, they are all as healthy as can be. FYI: i had 7 baby guppies, two got very white and died ( they were eating and everything but they died ) and 1 i fed to the angelfish, would this be a problem? Thanks a lot! This 12g tank is only a 2 month commitment for the fish, they will be re-located as I am moving countries, YAY! more

Resolved Question: Do loach eat apple snails too?

I've got a PROLIFIC (trumpet?) snail problem in one of my tropical aquariums, and was going to get some loach in to keep on top of them, as I believe in natural solutions, rather than chemical ones, but don't want to endanger my apple snails. If all else fails, i COULD remove them to another, smaller tank, but if the loach will ignore the larger snails and feast upon smaller ones ONLY, then I would be all set. Another solution is to get "assassin snails", but again, do they go for apple snails?? ANY help would be gratefully received!! more

Resolved Question: Where to buy a Catfish near Wakefield/West Yorkshire?

I have owned a tiger shovelnosed catfish named Doug! (Shovelnose!!!). He was eventually donated to a local hospice. I am now interested in buying another small catfish of the same breed, to again grow & then donate to an aquarium. I would like to show others the beauty of these fish!for Ryan N. As far as regarding a fish to a puppy, there is no contest, as a dog breeder myself, this is a really, really bad judgement. A dogs life span can reach 14, maybe even 20 years depending on the breed. Catfish live at least four times longer. To watch, love and respect a fish that grows, and to rehome said fish, when its outgrown a my 8x4x4 foot tank, is the best thing! Giving other people the chance to admire and respect the one of the other great creatures that shares our planet. more

Resolved Question: Looking after a single Corydora fish?

We have a tankful of goldfish and the seller included a Corydora fish in with them. However I've had Corydoras (Albino and Bandits) so I know these are unsuitable conditions for them. I want to give him a chance because I love their inquisitive nature. I've been thinking of setting up a small aquarium again but I need to accomodate him as a matter of emergency. Any ideas? I don't yet have a tank yet but I will get one ASAP. Any ideas meanwhile? more

Resolved Question: parrot fish losing their colour?

I have 5 of these, 2 are about 6-7" and the other 3 are around 2". I'm new to parrot fish, but water conditions are good and no disease or parasites. Filtration is good and kept on top of. We've had them for about 2 months but the 2 large ones have lost their colour quite a bit and gone pale instead of orange. They are not dyed or colour fed and never have been previously. The smaller ones have kept their colour. Their diet is also good consisting of (among other fish that feed on it too) high protien granules, cichlid pellet floaters, algae wafers, brineshrimp, bloodworm and cucumber, and the aquarium is large enough to house them. Hope that's enough info, any ideas?Mickey P. Water conditions are checked weekly and are good. The food i've listed above. Aquarium is big enough, a little under 300 gallons and also houses 8 clown loach, one 1 foot common plec ,1 1ft gibbicep, 1 black knife fish 8", and a bristlenose. Think i may have just seen the problem, a clown loach and my knife both have a small white flat blister on them...treatment time...i know about all the stuff you wrote, kept aquariums for a few years now. But thanks anyway. more

Resolved Question: How many fish can i have in an 8 gallon bowl shaped aquarium?

Thinking of adding three more minnows and maybe one more goldfish Will this be too much? CheersHave taken into account the comments on the goldfish i dont plan on keeping it for the long haul and will eventually transfer to a pond as it gets bigger it's currently under an inch long and seems quite content (racing around ect). more

Resolved Question: Terrapin love triangle? 2 Redears and a Sawback!?

Hi everyone, Last year I rescued 3 baby terrapins, male and female redears and a male sawback. A neighbour dumped them in the attic when she moved so I took them in. They were living in a very small goldfish/guppy aquarium, unheated, unfiltered and were understandably miserable. I found a great 140/50/40 tank and thanks to the advice of this site and a couple of others, added everything they need for lighting, heat and filtration - theyve since grown 5 or 6 times their size in as many months and over the past 6-8 weeks have begun the flirting behaviour (claw-flicking and following etc). The redear male is flirting heavily with the redear female but she seems uninterested and moves away from him. A few nights ago however, I did see her flirting...with the male Sawback, who is half her size! Very recently she has been biting at the redear male when hes been flirting (he does harass her a lot so it doesnt surprise me) but also some of the tank ornaments and things, and seems more agitated - is this normal? Besides the odd scrapping over food, theyve all gotten on very well with each other. Theres no real place for them to mate or lay eggs (floating log basking area and no gravel) so could this be a reason for frustration? Finally, given the size difference, will a sawback and redear really mate (and spurn another redear)? more

Resolved Question: Am i on the Right Track Seting up My Saktwater Aquarium?

Ok i have ordered a 60l marine BiOrb from the net ( i no its not the best tank and it aint recommened for marine fish but thats how life rolls).Anyway this is how i plan my set up when i recieve my tank.First i will open all the packaging and scrub the tank and ornaments with fresh tap water. Then i will place all my ornaments cerimic media heater etc in the tank but first i will set up the filter then i will mix the water with the salt provided i think its a cup for every 2 gallons correct me if im wrong. Then i will mix until clear water . i will then pump it slowly into the tank using the cleaner pump i purchased add some conditioner reading the label for the suitable amount to add then run everything eg. heater filter etc. and let it run for 24hrs.Then i will test for ammonia the next day with the liquid tests. i will keep testing for ammonia every day taking a sechule of my results when it finally reachs 0. i will give a test for nitrite the next day .after days of testing nitrite and writing down my results when it comes to 0 i will test for nitrate then after days of hard work i will test again and when it reachs 0 i will leave it for a day or two. I will then check the pH to make sure its at the right level for my occalris clowns .Then i will start stocking the tank with 2 clowns and a few inverts no more thn this because i no a BiOrb should have no more then i will feed them hikkari pellets twice a day a small amount and then every week i will change 1/3 of the water in the tank replacing it will fresh saltwater and pumpinjg it slowly back into the tank making sure its conditioned before i do this process. The other is that is it ok if i add fully cured or non cured live rock into my aquarium while in the middle of my cycle I will also make sure i do a fishless cycle. Is my set up Ok please make changes if you wish Oh and sorry for the really misspelled words and mistakes im rushing this as im very tired.Oh and something i forgot to add: when i mix the salt and water i should get an SG of 1.020 - 1.024 and i always forgot to say i should check the temp to make sure its between 72-78 degrees F (76 DF) more

Resolved Question: Fast "current" in aquarium? ?

I recently got a new filter for a largeish sized aquarium and its created a type of "current" in the water which looks like it is slightly strong for some of the small fish that I keep, I am wondering if this is bad for them or not and I should turn it down.. The fish do look a lot more active and almost like they are playing together in it (the could just try and hide away but they seem to swim onto it) so bare that in mind. Looking for experianced answers please. Thank you. They have places to hide and none of the fish use them to hide in general... Resolved Question: HELPPP my fish is swimming funny?

i have a small aquarium, maybe about 10 gallons with 3 comet fish. 2 of them are about 6 1/2 inches long and one is about 4 inches. (measure from head 2 end of tail) I do not have a filter, but i do have that bubble machine thingy... This morning i came home to find the 4 inch fish lying to its side at the bottom of the tank like a big U shape. I thought it had died, but when i probed it it started jolting around and swimming all funny. So then i put some tetra fin food into the tank. (BTW what R some good fish food brands?) and after a while the small fish seemed better, but it was still swimming a little oddly. This has already happened once before and i am not sure what to do. I am going 2 do a 40% water change later this evening. Also, I don't know if should get a filter for the fish even if the small one dies. and other than that I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO PLEASE HELP! more

Resolved Question: Fish illness, what is it?

I bought 3 platties for my 60l aquarium two days ago, and i'm sad to say one of them isn't looking to healthy. Resolved Question: One of my Platies always chases the other? Won't let smaller Platttie feed!?

I have three small platies, I added them to my tank this evening. They are the only inhabitants of my 60l aquarium. I have one red Platie, and two orang/black speckled ones. One of the orange ones is much fatter than the other orange one and chases and bites the smaller one whenever it sees it, it won't even let the other fish feed, the small one cowers at the bottom of the tank looking for scraps. Is this normal plattie behavior, as I heard they are a very peaceful species, the big one does not have a problem with the red platty, and they hang round together. Why is it chasing the other one? more

I have 5 large Silver Dollars in a 120 litre aquarium. A few weeks ago I noticed them darting around at high speed and crashing into the sides of the aquarium. 3 of them damaged their mouths but 1 of them developed a horrible looking disfigurement. Its like the fish is losing its mouth , both top and bottom jaws. Tha jaws are worn away a little bit revealing its small teeth and its all red. The quality of water is very good because I keep an eye on that . Out of the 5 Silver Dollars , 2 are fine , 2 got injured but are fine now but 1 developed this horrible ailment. What can I do to help the flesh under and over the fishes mouth to grow back??????????????? I dont want it to get worse , I'll probably have to do the descent thing and kill it , which of course I dont want , thanks. more

Resolved Question: Keeping fish - lots of questions....?

I'm thinking about getting a fish. I had fish when I was a lot younger but I really didn't research and had about 5 goldfish in one tiny tank with no filter or anything. I feel really bad about it so if I'm going to get a fish I'm going to make sure it has a nice life! Anyway, so I don't have enough space for a huge aquarium. It would have to be a pretty small tank. Therefore I would only get one fish. Which fish can live in the smallest tanks happily, and also won't grow too big and outgrow the tank? Also, as far as I've read a filter is the best way to go, but are these noisy? It would be in my room... Also, do I need a light? Even for non-tropical fish? Also can someone explain to me the whole 'cycling the tank' thing and the process of cleaning the tank. I used to pour out all the water with my old ones which I know is completely wrong! So what do I need to do? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: can a clown loach be kept in a 120 litre aquarium?

I have a rekord 120, its been in use for a year, i currently keep in this tank a few fancy goldfish with a few compatible tropicals, but I'm moving the goldfish soon and would like to keep only tropicals in this tank as its a good size, and i have started to make a list for a tropical community tank, i love the look of clown loaches and i would really really like to keep 1, the only thing that has put me off has been their size and the fact they could live for 50 years... Thinkfish.com has a community creator, and when i used it said i could keep 3 clown loaches and the small number of other fish i would like to keep, AND that it would still be below my tanks capacity. I really want this fish, its so beautiful; should i keep a clown loach in my new community tank? more

Resolved Question: We only have male sea monkeys!?

My son has a sea monkey aquarium, 6 hatched, one female and five males, the female was always small, slow moving, staying at the bottom of the tank most of the time, occasionally 'flinching' eventually she died. We now only have 5 males, I know that they can reproduce in a number of ways, including asexually, but is that just females? Im wondering if the males are enough to carry on breeding, or if we need to start again? more

Resolved Question: Tropical Aquarium Noise and Bedrooms?

I'm thinking of getting a reasonably small tropical aquarium for my bedroom. The question I have is that is it ok, or possible, to turn the filters etc that make noise OFF over night so they do not keep me awake? Im aware that obviously the heaters will need to stay on to maintain the aquarium temperature and this isn't a problem, its just I'm worried that the filters/oxygenators will keep me awake as I know from past experience they can be noisey. Any answers/comments greatfully received! more

Resolved Question: aquarium snails, should i keep them or get rid of them?

ive had my tropical tank for 6 or 7 weeks now and when i put my first plants in i noticed one snails, honestly one i tried hard to find another but only one anyways, there was only one, i added another plant as the pets at home plants died quite quickly :( so i added another, which has lived healthily and grown (from a lfs). now there are about 7 snails. in your experience should i keep them? can they do anything bad? if its best to remove them can they live in small test tube or tub because i like them :D if that's not ok could i put the in my friends pond? cheers ! ah! i do have fish! i thought that fish eat snails !i have a test tube for getting my water tested can i ikeep them in there :)ok, im going snail finding!do plecos eat them, cos hes sort of like a loach isent he :)woa! thanks alot, loads of detail. i think ill keep them unless they over reproduce they are like a unicorns horn and very small, the biggest one ive found is no bigger than a half a cm.im afraid my tank is both small and full. ill just see how the snails go more

Resolved Question: Creature in my fish tank.?

I have recently found a small creature in my fish tank. It is about 3mm in length. It basically looks like a very small white sting ray with black dots and legs. I had one previously but I think of my fish ate it. In my aquarium I keep only goldfish (all different breeds). At first I thought it was a baby goldfish...but goldfish don't have legs right. I have taken it out of the tank and put it in a small bowl. Is it a parasite? Should I be worried? Thanks. *mi*Unfortunately I can't take a picture of it - not unless it gets larger. It's definitely not hydra - it could be a shrimp. I found that it could be the Amano shrimp because it has a similar pattern, but not the right shape. more
