Open Question: ceiling fan, making odd noise, like a breathing noise?

just so you know, my ceiling fan has not come to life, i just can't think of a better word, its as if someone is breathing in deeply and loudly, and then letting it out a little quieter.i have a good quality ceiling fan, its about 3 years old, and i do say that i run it on high every night, all night. And then turn it off during the day, but, last night it started making this off noise, like almost as if its breathing. It starts off quiet, and gradually gets louder. I wore earplugs this morning to block out the noise (im a light sleeper) but do you have any idea what might be wrong with my fan? i depend on this fan! i cant fall asleep unless i have it on, to keep my room cool, and do make sure its not dead silent in my room more

Open Question: Why are my appliances/fixtures all dying at once?

About a week ago I tried to use my microwave and it just didn't work at all. The time would count down, but nothing else was happening. It was kind of old, so we bought a new microwave. Then two days later I tried to start the dishwasher. When I latched it the "normal" cycle button was flashing and the machine was beeping, and nothing I tried stopped that, and it didn't do anything else. It was older and not worth fixing, so we bought a new one. And then yesterday I discovered that the light in my bedroom (which is part of a ceiling fan) only flashes once when we try to turn it on. We tried changing the bulb, but that wasn't it. We have been running the air conditioner more lately. We have only lived here since November, so I don't have any other summer to compare it to, but I wondered if it's causing some electrical problems. Or is it a coincidence that they are all dying at the same time? We are going to call an electrician, but any tips you can share would be helpful.ETA: The house is only 5 years old, and we did have an inspection when we bought it in November. The inspector did find some electrical problems (inconveniences, nothing hazardous) in the recently finished basement. more

Voting Question: Is it possible to add additional electrical wiring from a light source to a new light source (using conduit).?

I have a back patio light that is obsolete now that I added a covered porch. Voting Question: Help me wire my ceiling fan.?

I am replacing a typical light fixture with a ceiling fan with its own light fixture. When I took down the existing light fixture to replace the pancake box, I found the following: 2 black and 2 white wires, all wire-nutted together. 3 white wires all wire-nutted together with another white wire from the light fixture. 1 red wire wire nutted to the black wire from the light fixture. 1 red and 1 white wire not connected to anything(the ends are not stripped) My fan has black, white, green and blue wire. so how do i connect this? Voting Question: What do you think the "combined" Amps of all the appliances that I list below, when running at the same time.?

A modern 17 inch wide monitor laptop from Dell, a 12 Year old RCA Television Set, a 25 year old ceiling fan, a mostly new ultra compact stereo, a 7-8 year old WindMachine floor fan, a 60 watt portable swamp cooler, a four year old Sony clock radio, a ten year old Radio Shack large illuminated clock, a newer Emerson clock radio, three (incandesent) 100 watt light, eight (incandesent) 25 watt lights, two (incandesent) 200 watt lights, four (incandesent) 60 watt light chandelier (with ceiling plug-in for vacume cleaner) two 75 watt lights, one 40 watt light, two 100 watt porch lights (bulbs not listed as incandesent are modern energy saving ones)),......The reason I ask this long question. I live in a house with 1915 WWI era wiring. All of the above run through two 30 Amp Fuses (which should probably be using 20 Amp fuses), that carry the entire Living & Dining Rooms, as well as two bedrooms. These two fuses are mounted on a thick marble slab with yes, asbestos behind it (they can get a little warm sometimes, especially with the ceiling fan running)......I know this all sounds rather sceary, but is a necesary reality, as we don't have the money to rewire currently. I try not to have too much on at one time for obvious reasons. more

Resolved Question: electrical - pull chain - ceiling fan.?

I do not want a fire. Please do not guess!! The pull chain broke in the ceiling fan for the light broke. Someone took the light part down and took it apart, didn't write down what wire came from what. I got new switch. It is a pull chain with two black wires one on each side but the old one had two blue wires. In the ceiling fan there is a green and a white. Everything else is connected to the fan switch and into the ceiling (fan works). The light has one black and one white. When I but the new switch in what do I connect to the black? and what do I connect to the white? Then what do I connect to the ceiling fan that has the green and white? do I connect both black to the blue in the light fixture and do not connect it to the green in the fan and just connect the two whites? I am lost. Please help. I can not afford a electrician.switch black to what white to what light blue to what white to what Fan green to what what to what more

Resolved Question: Trying to install ceiling fan with light. I have 2 black wires, 2 white, 1 red and 2 bare ground?

Where on Earth do all of these wires go? My ceiling fan has normal wires of black, blue, green, and white. I was also going to install a remote at the wall switch, and when I took the original switch off, I noticed I have the same amount of wires there as I do coming from the ceiling. Would that mean I'm already wired to control my fan and light separately, without the use of a remote? Or do I just have the normal stuff going on there. None of my diagrams in the manuals show the wiring I have. Please help!!It's a Harbor Breeze Springfield. I'm far more confused by the house wiring than the fan wiringOh yeah. And the remote deal is the Lutron MaestroThere are two different wires coming into both the ceiling junction box, and the one at the wall. In one wire, there is a black, white, red, and bare. In the other, there is a black, white, and bare. There are a total of seven wires inside the box. Two blacks, two whites, two bares, and a red. When I pulled the original fixture off, the blacks were spliced together, and the whites we spliced together. more

Resolved Question: Ceiling Fan Installation Help - 2 pairs of wires to deal with?

Hello, I took down a ceiling fan in a small bedroom my wife and I re-modeled... Its been far too long to remember how the wiring was setup when I took the original down (just old/dirty but still worked fine..). Anyways, the original worked by chain pulls for both fan/light but power could be turned on/off to the unit via the switch on the wall - pretty common setup I suppose... Now - I am trying to install the new ceiling fan... somehow I've bypassed the light switch - meaning: I have successfully powered up the light/fan (which work by the pull chains) but the switch on the wall doesn't work to turn power on/off to the new unit... Current Wiring: White (ceiling) to White (fan) Black (ceiling) to Black/Blue (fan) Green (ceiling mount) to Green (fan) I know I have to incorporate the other pair somehow to loop it down to the switch - just not sure how to do so ;) - any advice would be most helpful... thanks for your time ;)Does it help that I've mentioned I have the thing powered up working properly by the chain pulls? Does this mean the pair hooked up to the new unit must be the power feed, right? I now have another pair (white/black) capped off waiting to be thrown into the mix...The pair that are capped = switch loop ? more

Voting Question: Where can I buy a UC7051R receiver for a Hampton Bay fan?

I've looked at Home Depot, but they only have universal remote/receiver kits that mount at the ceiling. My part number is UC7051R and it is a small round receiver mounted in the hub below the fan that holds the light kit. Home Depot had no details and the Hampton Bay website is useless.I was able to find a new receiver through King of Fans (http://www.kingoffans.com). They need the UPC number from the fan to look up the information, but they were able to get a new receiver in the mail to me. more

Voting Question: Unsticking melted (perished) rubber from glass-- ideas please!!?

Hi, we live in Australia, land of extra-hot. We have ceiling fans in the bedroom which have lights in them. I need to remove a piece of glass covering the bulbs in order to change them... however, in this heat, and over time, the rubber "ring" that acts as a buffer between the glass covering the bulbs, and the metal of the fan behind it, has perished, melted, etc., and now the glass is stuck to it. There is not place for me to "jimmy" or get in between-- picture a curved bowl perfectly placed up against a slightly larger one facing in the opposite direction. Perfect fit. Any ideas how I can separate this without breaking the glass? I suspect I will NOT be replacing it when we finally do get it off, but I really don't want broken glass all over the bedroom if we can avoid it. Any help would be appreciated, if you need more details, please tell me! Thanks :) more

Voting Question: Will dark curtains help?

The weather's hotter than usual at the equator right now. My room has a low ceiling and large windows, with light colored curtains. This means the sunlight streamed into the room despite the curtains being drawn. The AC doesn't help cool the place as it only causes hot air to circulate in the room. I'm thinking if I get really DARK curtains to blot out sunlight (+ a fan) would it help make the room cooler... any ideas? more

Resolved Question: Ceiling fan/light fixture?

One night I had the light and fan on. I wanted to just have the fan on, so I pulled the string for the light, and it went off. The next night, I asked my dad if he could pull the string to turn it on, but then he broke it. He went to go buy a pull chain switch. He installed it, and now the fan won't turn on, or the light. I don't know if he put the wires wrong or something else. There's 2 black wires coming from the pull chain switch, and a black and white wire coming from where you screw in the bulb. Coming from the ceiling, is a blue wire and a white wire, then different wires connected to other ones like yellow together, and there's also a red wire.Yes, the breaker was turned back on. more

Resolved Question: Part 2 - PLEASE READ AND GIVE FEEDBACK?

KEEP IN MIND I AM 13 YEARS OLD. The dorm was a complete riot. It seemed like everyone on the face of this earth was some way or another, locked up in this small, narrow hallway. And they were running, back and forth with faces like they were locked up in Disneyland. I began to push and shove to find my way out and it only worked a little bit. I got through about ten people and I was pushed back. I was pushed back by a man wearing a white suit and biohazard mask. He stood there still, like a guard from London. He was as tall as a small tree. And it seemed like he weighed over 300 pounds. As I stood in front of him, I glared into his eyes. Well, I tried to. They were hidden by a black shade cover and all I could see was my reflection. “Excuse me.” I asked, politely. He stood there, spreading his legs apart so he could cover the entire doorway now. I titled my head in confusion. “Excuse me, sir.” I reminded him. “I have an exam I need to get to.” The dorm went silent. It seemed like everyone must have heard our little conversation, if that’s what it was. I turned back and saw every ones eyes meeting with mine, shocked and fierce. “Please, sir.” I was frustrated. “I need to get through.” He was absolutely still, seeming like he had no need to even breathe. I shook my head and turned around. I started walking back to my room, but suddenly, I had a wave of confidence. I whipped around to face the man again and my bag slowly followed me. I was sprinting towards the man, step by fast step. He didn’t seem alarmed. “I wouldn’t do that.” He whispered. At that moment, my head met his abdomen and I was the one who got sent backwards. I landed on my bottom and my head soon flicked back to the ground. “Jared, he’s here for a reason.” Once voiced called. “Yea just let him do his thing.” Another one yelled. I rose from the concrete and tiles. I was standing near the crowd more so, now. The man put his hand to his here and pushed down. He turned around and whispered a few words. I couldn’t make them out. “Jared Creed.” The Man called. “Is there a Jared Creed?” I looked back, in hopes of finding a different Jared Creed. No luck. I turned back around and faced him. I raised my hand. “I’m Jared Creed.” My hands becoming sweaty. My head started to burn. I wiped the wetness trickling down my forehead. “You need to come with me.” His voice became husky. “Now.” “What for?” I asked, curious. I took another wipe; it didn’t seem to go away. My heart started pounding in my chest and I could feel it in my ears. “Come with me!” The man yelled. He extended his arm and grabbed mine. I was being dragged to an unknown place. “Let me go!” I shouted; knowing it wouldn’t work. The rest of the students left behind looked and stared in astonishment. As this man was wielding my arm like it was a weapon, we passed another man. Just as tall as this one; wearing the same suit. “Go.” The man carrying me had said. The other man nodded and trailed off to the hallway where I had once just been. “Where are you taking me?” I asked impatiently. “And where is that man going?” I had questions and I desperately needed some answers. I was going to give up. My weak legs now just dragged against the cold floor. The arm that was being torn off was limp. I found out why. We had stopped in some kind of tent. There was a woman. She was skinny with brown hair pulled into a bun. She had a needle in her hand, ready for use. The man holding me tightened his grip. “Ugh.” I whispered, with my eyes slowing shutting. I felt a sharp pain on the right side of my neck. And then it got heavy, like concrete was being forced in via a small needle. I was drifting in and out of conscience, but more out than in. Before I succumbed to whatever it was she was injecting me with, I heard a noise. Faintly. It was like a pistol. Like gunshots, but too slow to be one handgun, coming from the hallway. I heard faint screams and shrieks that ended all too rapidly. “What are they—“I tried to say. “What are you do—“ “Sterilization.” An unknown voice responded. August 29, 2012 Another nightmare; but different. Ice was blowing into my face. The sweat that should be running down my blue cheeks froze. I was shivering and I was pretty sure it looked like a seizure. My teeth were clacking down against each other. The man that had once grabbed my arm and dragged me into the unknown was there once more. He lifted his hand and it rapidly made its way to my face. And everything went black. “Ah!” I shouted. My back arched and my body lifted off the bed I was situated in. My eyes were shaking and the lids were open wide, like blinking was unnecessary. I was staring at the ceiling, but instead a bright light took its place. I was staring into a ceiling fan, I soon realized. “Hello?” I called. It seemed to echo, but that was me being paranoid. “Is anybo more

Resolved Question: Harry Potter Fans????

I'm writng a harry potter 8 just for my own amusement, this is the very start, what do you think? - Chapter One - The Expected Letter At number twelve Grimmauld Place, Albus Severus Potter waited anxiously in his bedroom, pacing backwards and forwards. The room seemed cluttered with wall hangings; people zooming in and out on broomsticks waving merrily at one another. A sneakoscope lay abandoned next to an open book, entitled, Quidditch through the ages. He paused momentarily, glaring outside into the dark sheets of the early morning. Staring eagerly, searching the clouds for any sign of an owl. Albus had just had his eleventh birthday and had been waiting anxiously for many days, locked in his bedroom, searching the skies for any sign of life. His brother James had provoked Albus so much in the past fortnight, that magic had started exploding from him unexpectedly when he grew angry. His father, Harry, had taken James into his bedroom and he hadn’t said anything afterwards. Albus dropped onto his bed, which creaked slightly as the extra weight was forced upon it. The moon had begun to set, allowing the sun to rise for another long awaited day. The light rested on his face, illuminating his grandmothers glorious green eyes. He had been the only one of the three children to inherit this particular feature. In fact, he had inherited more from his father than his mother. The same shaggy jet black hair lay untidily over his forehead, obscuring his vision slightly. Slowly the light brightened his room, lighting up miniscule pieces of dust, flitting casually in and out of the window. Albus stared at the ceiling, waiting for his mothers voice, calling him from downstairs. He glanced around his room: the walls seemed to be painted in red and gold, Gryffindor colours. In the centre was a replica, four poster bed, which he now comfortably lay upon.email me if you want more of it . ive done more than that db-dbz-dbgt_no1fan@hotmail.co.ukThanks for the support :), really appreciate it. Resolved Question: Is it possible to move things with your mind if you're emotional enough?

Like if you're sad, mad, tense, or happy enough? I was having a huge heated argument with my dad a couple days ago, and I was SO pissed off. Voting Question: Installing a drop box and ceiling fan where none was before?

Our family room is in dire need of better air circulation. I'd like to have a ceiling fan with an attached light installed in the middle of the ceiling. The nearest wiring in the ceiling is a can light by the fire place. The ceiling fan should be placed about 5 feet from where that can-light is. I intend to have an electrician do this work, but would like to have an estimate on how much a licensed electrician would charge for this. I know it involves pulling wire and such. I just need some idea on how much this would run so I know if an estimate is fair. I live in the Nashville area in Tennessee. Thanks for your input. more

Resolved Question: Can someone shed some light on a question concerning a home air conditioning system?

My husband and I are purchasing a home and are in the repair stages of the closing, and my husband was told by the air conditioning repair man that since the double car garage was converted into a bedroom, we could use a bigger a/c unit. He fixed the one that is there, but mentioned that we should add extra insulation and a bigger ceiling fan in that bedroom. We went to the house twice throughout the day, and the unit was still running. I don't know if he had set it to "on" or to "auto", but should the a/c run that long if it is on auto? Does that mean that because we could use a bigger unit (he suggested another ton), the unit may run all day, causing our bill to increase? Also, should the seller have to upgrade the unit to provide air conditioning to the entire home? Would that be fair and is that the norm, considering that they converted the garage? Useful, knowledgeable info is appreciated. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Help! My apartment flooded!?

So I came home from work today and when I walked into my apartment I heard a sound like it was "raining" inside! To my horror, when I turned on the light I saw all the kitchen was flooded and there was water leaking from my roof. All the kitchen floor was filled with water and half the living room carpet, as well as my TV and ceiling fan. When I went upstairs to check out I saw that my toilet was overflowing again! So this happened before when we first moved, it leaked into the living room last time and the landlord came the next day and brought in a plumber who "claimed it was fixed." She didn't inquire about water damage even though it had leaked into the downstairs. So my question is, can my landlord move us to another place? This house can eventually be filled with mold with the water pockets in the walls and water damage to the ceiling. more

The four way light fixture says on the bottom that it is for installation on a ceiling fan only - why can't i use it without the fan? more

Resolved Question: Two separate switches - ceiling fan, light fixture on fan. How do I wire them?

Resolved Question: If I've already paid a non-refundable security deposit, do I still owe my landlord money for damages?

As part of my rental agreement, I had to pay $500 for a non-refundable security deposit. 2 weeks before the end of my lease, I receive a cleaning checklist which claims that they can charge me various amounts for things like burnt out light bulbs, dirty blinds, and other random things. Isn't this what a security deposit is for? In case of unpaid rent or damages? It seems to me like it would be ridiculous for them to charge me 10 dollars for not cleaning the ceiling fan when they already have $500 of my money. I guess my question is do I have the right to refuse payment if I end up getting charged for not cleaning something? more

Resolved Question: What are the best improvements to make to my rental property?

I own a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house that is not able to sell due to the downturn in the housing market. Therefore, I have been renting it the last couple of years. I want to do some work to it because getting good renters to pay what I want has been hard. Everyone is looking for a "deal" right now. A little about the house: Kitchen has older appliances Tile floor in the kitchen and both bathrooms Hardwood floors in all other areas (no carpet in the house at all) Has been painted a neutral color a year ago 1 bathroom has been completely rennovated a few years back, however the other one was rennovated back in the 80's (outdated, but nice and no crazy colors) Large closets in all the bedrooms, but all the doors are original to the house and could use updating (built in the 80's) Ceiling fan in each bedroom and dining room (older ceiling fans) So, I want to put money into the house but don't want to go over the top and have tenants ruin these thing and never see the money back. So, what I was thinking is putting a fresh coat of ceiling paint on the ceilings and updating all lighting. Touchup any paint that needs it. And maybe putting in new appliances. What do you think? Should I hold off on the appliances, or is this one of those items that tenants really look for? Any other suggestions? Other ideas I had was to update the doors and all hardware, update the vanity and flooring in the outdated bath. I don't have enough money to do everything, so please list what is most important on getting top dollar for my rental. Thanks!I have explored other options like owner financing and rent 2 own but never fully went through with it. Had a few people interested, though. It seems like they couldn't make up their mind before signing the papers and eventually decided against it and rented it back out again to cover the mortgage more

Resolved Question: Ok to put baby to bed in just a diaper?

Our bedroom gets a little hot in the Summer, we have a ceiling fan going full speed but it just feels like a warm room with a fan going, so there is a breeze. Baby (7 weeks old) sleeps in the crib next to my bed and tonight she happened to fall asleep in my arms in just a diaper before I had put her clothes on, so I put her in the crib, not wanting to wake her to dress her. She slept for 6 hours straight in the crib, longer than ever. She got up to eat around 1 am and just finished nursing a moment ago, is it okay to let her sleep with just a diaper on if I have a light blankie on her? (like a receiving blanket) more

Resolved Question: is the ground wire a requirement?

is the ground wire a requirement? i am replacing a dimmer switch to a regular on/off switch to run a ceiling fan. it works but i didn't connect a ground wire because it is setup in a way i am not familiar with. I have 3 sets of wires connected together, two go up, one comes from the bottom. the dimmer switch was hopped up with just 2 wires and i used only those 2 to connect the on/off switch. do i need the ground? any advice on how to properly run that since i have 3 ground wires hooked up together? i figured one is coming from the breaker, and one is going to the ceiling fan...not sure about the third but i figured it probably extends the ground to another electrical outlet or light. any help will be greatly appreciated.Steve, thanks for replying to quickly. Just wanted to clarify...i got rid of the dimmer and have a single post switch. other times when i changed a light switch i only had 3 wires to work with. i think what i have here is a juction box? the old dimmer switch that has been there since before i bought this house only worked from 2 wires. the bare wires (3 of them, i assume they are the ground.) are joined together. problem i am having is they are bonder with a wired nut... i guess i'll try and track down one of these "grounding clips" so i can easily run a ground to the electric switch tomorrow.i found this as a grounding clip...but this says it is to ground the electrical box. is this the right thing? http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?jspStoreDir=hdus&catalogId=10053&productId=100154487&navFlow=3&keyword=ground%2Bclip&langId=-1&searchRedirect=ground+clip&storeId=10051&endecaDataBean=com.homedepot.sa.el.wc.catalog.beans.EndecaDataBean%406b423caf&ddkey=Search more

Resolved Question: what is wrong with me?!?

first off, im 12 yrs old. 1.) a few months ago, i woke up around 7 A.M. and, laying in bed, i suddenly started shaking uncontrollably. i was freezing cold, but i had like 5 blankets on. i woke my 14 yr old sister up by saying her name a few times, and i made her go into my parents' bedroom and wake them up. my mom came into my room and i told her that i woke up and was shaking uncontrollably, i was cold, and i cant walk or hardly sit up. she didnt know what to do. this also happened about a month later, the exact same thing happened. annyone know if this is serious, what it is, any info on it? 2.) about a month or so ago, i woke up from a silly dream i had. i sat up, and once again tried to get my sister to wake up also. i tried saying her name, but she could not hear me, so i walked over to her and started telling her about the dream i was having. i know for a fact that i wasnt fully awake, because this isnt something i would take seriously if i was. so, i know i had to be halfway asleep if that makes sense. anyways, my dream was about a game show, and i know this sounds stupid, but one of the questions was "is the twilight big or small" and the person answered small, so the crowd and everyone went wild because that was wrong i guess. they started yelling at each other and all i saw from then on was just books and people going around in circles. thats when i woke up and went to my sister. i told her to come to the living room, because i heard a party out there, but really, nothing was out there, and i kept hearing noises like i was still dreaming. i dont think this was sleep walking, cause if it was, i wouldnt remember any of it (ive sleep walked before and my family have told me about what i do, like walking into their room and saying wheres my other shoe, hahahah). but im not an expert, so does anyone know what that was also, information..? anything at this point is helpful to me. 3.} last night around 10 P.M, me and my sister were sitting in our room texting our friends and just hanging out, eating a cookie, and all. and then my mom came in and told us to go to sleep. so we turned off the light and layed there with the phones for about 10 more minutes, then turned them off. i tried to sleep, but all i did was lay there for like 1 hour and 30 minutes, cause i couldnt sleep at all. i finally said "Taylor, are you awake too" and she said yeah, but i figured out she had been texting, but i couldnt tell when i was trying to sleep because her phone was under a blanket, so i couldnt see the light. i started freaking out out of nowhere. i was extremely hot, even know the air conditioning was on, my ceiling fan was on, and i only had a sheet covering me.i couldnt sleep, even though i was REALLY REALLY tired, and it was now 12:20 A.M., and i was so tired cuz i had all sports camp from the past 3 days, going on from 8 in the morning to 4:30 in the afternoon. so i was like exhausted. my sister asked me to see my phone, i said okay but i cant come give it to you, i feel really weak, like a noodle (i couldnt even reach up to my headboard/shelf to grab the phone). i couldnt walk, or sit up. she comes over, grbs the phone, and walks back to her bed, and then i tell her to go get my mom because i cant walk. she didnt understand why i couldnt walk, so she said no, that i need to try at least, cuz she was trying to help. so i try to walk to my parents' room, and when i get in there, i say mom, dad, i dont feel good and stuff like that but they didnt wake up so i go back to my room. and i lay in bed and start crying, but idk why, prolly cuz i was tired. taylor says, whats wrong and stuff and she immediately gets up and goes to wake up my mom. so my mom comes in and i sit up and start crying harder, and my mom and sister start talking so i didnt have to explain what was wrong. my sister knew cuz i told her a few minutes ago. so my mom said to go sleep in the living room on the couch where it's cooler (its cooler in there cuz its closer to the air conditioning thing, when my room is in the back of the house, so its hot i gues) so i go out there, and take a thin blanket with me, and my pillow, my mom comes in a minute later and gives me a cold cloth to put on my head to cool down. it took a while, but i fell asleep finally. my sister said "this sounds weird and stupid, but youre probably like too tired to sleep." but i dont really know what was wrong. can anyone help? if you can explain just one, thats good, but if i could get answers on all 3, thatd be even better. :D thanks in advance.sorry that was so long, i just had a lot to explain.. and sorry, this is in the wrong category, but i didnt know, or even care, what category it was in. more
